Want to know what products I swear by for achieving a flawless complexion? Read on…
I’ve had a couple of requests on this for a while now, such as whats the best foundation that lasts all day to whats better setting spray or powder?
How to create a flawless base is simple, you need to know your skin. If products make your skin oily or too dry – ditch them! I have combination skin so I know what products work to suit my complexion on a day-to-day basis.
I’ve rounded up my favourite go-to products that are foolproof for day and nightwear.
Step 1: Moisturise!
I regretfully used to skip this step occasionally, only because a primer may do the job of this. Personally I’ve noticed how much better my foundation sticks and lasts when I moisturise beforehand. My two choices would be the SkinChemists Rose Quartz Moisturiser and Manuka Doctor Gold Dust Serum. If my skins feeling a little dry, the Rose Quartz moisturiser is soo hydrating with coconut oil and aloe vera. I love how pink the serum is but it soaks into the skin instantly. You can feel it firm and plump! The Gold Dust Serum is more what I would wear on a night-time due to the glitter effect. The serum nourishes and you can see the tiny speckles of gold on your face and chest – a glamorous moisturiser.
Step 2: Primer it!
Whether you chose to moisturize or not, a primer is essential on keeping your makeup in place. Again depending on your skin type, it may be you prefer a creamy texture or a water-like effect. I’ve tried a lot of primers and hands down my favourite has to be Benefit Porefessional. It’s a creamy matte texture that smooths onto your skin, banishing the appearance of pores. I wear this with any foundation whether matte or dewy and it sets it completely. However if you fancy something more illuminating I’m loving the Lancôme La Base Pro Hydra Glow. This is super hydrating while also adding a subtle highlighting glow. This soaks in pretty quick and pairs really nice with a dewy foundation – essential for summer!
Step 3: The Base!
The holy grail of makeup has to be a foundation. This is quite possibly the hardest product to buy as you need to know what works, what lasts and what coverage you prefer. my favourite coverage has to be medium with a dewy finish. I like foundations that feel lightweight and don’t look cakey but still cover your blemishes and acne. I get asked a lot whats your favourite and hands down it has to be the Yves Saint Laurent Teint Touche Eclat. I’ve used this foundation (here) for three years now and I’ve never looked back. I’ve tried a variety of brands but I always see myself reaching back to this. It has an illuminating effect with the built-in Touche Eclat so not only does it give you that glow, it lasts all day too. I’ve worn this on holiday in 35 degree heat and it doesn’t budge! The only full coverage foundation I do like when I need that extra coverage is the Tarte Amazonian Clay foundation (here). I’ve always found full coverage to look cakey on me but this one still feels and looks lightweight. I love how this just blurs all your imperfections and it definitely gives you that photo-ready skin!
If you fancy trying something new, I’ve currently been testing out a Makeupdrop Silicone Blender. If you haven’t seen these where have you been? The idea is rather than using a brush or sponge that absorbs your foundation, this will 100% apply all of your foundation. Now I wasn’t sure at first, I found it very slippery to hold but after a couple of uses its quite good on applying, especially if you want to make your foundation last longer!
Step 4: Conceal!
I love trying out different types of concealer. The more coverage the better for me but its hard finding the right one as some have a consistency of cracking. My got-to concealer has to be Seventeen Skin Wow. This is a dupe to the famous Touche Eclat (here) and for only £5, it does wonders! It hides my dark circles and any spots that needs covering. I use it where you would put highlighter and it does give your skin that radiance! I’ve also started using Joan Collins’ Fade to Perfect Concealer. Like the name suggests, this gives amazing coverage to fade any blemishes. I love the application of these two concealers and I just set them with a complexion sponge.
Step 5: Set it!
Before I apply any powders I set my base with a finishing powder or spray. Especially if my skin is oily I wear the Vichy Dermablend Setting Powder. This applies transparent and smooths onto your skin. I use a brush, to dab the powder around my face and it sets instantly. It creates a smooth surface ready for my powders without the dry feeling. for when I’ve finished my full face makeup, my favourite has to be Urban Decay’s All Nighter Setting Spray. I’ve used this for a couple of years now and its amazing how long your makeup lasts in this. If your going on holiday this spray is a must for the heat. I also use this for extra pigment in eyeshadows, simply spray your face a couple of times and your good to go.
You don’t have to spend a fortune on creating a flawless base, it’s just testing out what works for you! All of the products I’ve mentioned, I’ve used above! I would love to know what your favourite base products are, I’m always up for recommendations…
